Luquillo beach is located 15 minutes drive away from The Serene House and is one of the five blue flag beaches in Puerto Rico, with crystal clear water and fine sand. Seven Seas beach is also a popular beach 20 minutes away, in Fajardo, with plenty of amenities available. For a more private, secluded beach trip, Playa Escondida is the perfect place. Meaning ‘hidden’ in Spanish, it requires a 25 minute walk through a mangrove forest, but the unspoiled beauty waiting at the end is worth it.

Sailing to Cayo Icacos and Isla Palomino
Charter a private boat or take a catamaran tour to discover the gorgeous island of Icacos. Cayo Icacos is a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Fajardo, that forms part of the La Cordillera Reef Nature Reserve. As no building is permitted on the island, it is filled with untouched nature and clear views. Isla Palomino is another uninhabited island accessible only by private charter. Its coral reefs, seagrass beds and rocky coast species make Isla Palomino excellent for snorkeling in its crystal clear waters.

Explore nearby rivers and waterfalls
If you prefer freshwater swimming to the sea, there are plentiful rivers and waterfalls in Puerto Rico to enjoy instead. Among them are Charco Frio, Las Tinajas and Las Paylas. Charco Frio is a popular river destination where you can bring a picnic, enjoy the cool river pools and spend the day relaxing on the rocks. Las Tinajas is for the more adventurous traveler as it requires some rock climbing to get to the beautiful falls and pools at the end. Las Paylas is known for its ‘natural water slide’ where you can slide down the smooth rocks and land in the pools - a great day out for both kids and adults!
